Google Voice - Your Last Phone Number

Google Voice

Formerly known as GrandCentral, Google will shortly be opening up Google Voice through invites. With Google Voice you will have one number for all your calls and SMS. You might have heard of this before, but not be able to recall why it sounds familiar. GV Mobile was removed from Apple's App Store (AT&T is probably to blame).

What is Google Voice?

Google VoiceGoogle's aim is for you to only need to give out one number and people can reach you on any phone you wish - your cell, house, work, etc. When you setup your contacts you will be able decide which phone the contact (or group) rings. So if your family is calling you can set all three lines to ring, but if it's a client, just your work phone.

Call Features

Of course Google has plenty of features in store, what else would you expect?
Call screening - Caller ID that announces who is calling
Listen in - If you aren't sure whether you want to answer the call or not you can press 3 to send it to voicemail and listen in as they leave the message. If you decide that you want to take the call, you can!
SMS - You will be able to receive, send, and store SMS
Free US calls - All numbers in the US are free to call

Voicemail Features

Voicemail transcripts - You can read what your voicemail says as well as check them online
Online Voicemail
Notifications - When a caller leaves you a voicemail you can be notified via email or SMS
Personalized voicemail - Specify what voicemail specific callers hear

Other Features

Conference calling - Connect multiple people into a single call
Record calls - Record a call which can be stored online
Call switch - Switch phones mid call

Getting an Invite

Currently Google Voice is invite only, but will eventually be open to the public. In the meantime, you can register for an invite here.
